Final 53
The Steelers officially announced final cuts today. The newly unemployed include rookies Isaac Redman, Sonny Harris, and AQ Shipley. The biggest surprise here is Redman, who presumably lost the final RB roster spot to Frank Summers. Who knows if draft position came into play on this decision or if Summers brought more to the table as a blocking fullback and special teams player. Despite the fan support for Redman, he likely would have had little impact on the gameday roster outside the role of goal line back. Hopefully he, as well as Harris and Shipley, clear waivers and are placed on the practice squad.
Also cut from the team were Carey Davis, Bruce Davis, Donovan Woods, and tackles Jeremy Parquett and Jason Capizzi.
Sean McHugh, the number 3 tight end from a year ago, was placed on IR with knee issues.
A surprising 9 rookies made the squad. Ziggy Hood, Kraig Urbik, Mike Wallace, Keenan Lewis, Frank Summers, Joe Burnett, and David Johnson came from the draft. Ramon Foster was an undrafted free agent. Stefan Logan was signed from the CFL. Another 6 second year players made the team - Rashard Mendenhall, Limas Sweed, Dennis Dixon, Doug Legursky, Ryan Mundy, and Patrick Bailey. In what many are calling one of the deepest and most talented training camps, let's give major credit to Kevin Colbert and the front office staff for doing such a nice job finding young guys. Steeler nation should get used to these names. They are the future.
Lastly, in the "I probably don't even need to mention it" category, preseason sensation Stefan Logan earned a roster spot and will hopefully continue his electric ways as the permanent punt returner.
